Emotional Coping

Emotional Coping

Emotional Coping is an important component of trauma-focused cognitive behavioural therapy (TF-CBT). This practice element outlines how to support young people to manage emotions using physical relaxation strategies. It is complemented by the Behavioural Coping and Cognitive Coping practice guides, which support young people to manage strong emotions by modifying their actions and their thought patterns respectively.

Behavioural Coping

Behavioural Coping

Behavioural Coping gives young people ways to deal with difficult or stressful emotions, particularly those associated with trauma. The Behavioural Coping practice element complements the Cognitive Coping and Emotional Coping practice elements.

Cognitive Coping

Cognitive Coping

Cognitive Coping aims to help young people become more aware of their thoughts (especially those linked to trauma) and learn to change or manage them. When young people have had traumatic experiences, it can affect the way they think about themselves, others, and the world. Cognitive Coping supports young people to become aware of how their thinking patterns influence their feelings and behaviour. It also guides them to challenge their thinking to improve feelings and behaviour.
